Almora is a hill
station in the state of Uttarakhand. Almora was the capital of the Chand
Dynasty, which ruled over Kumaon for nearly a thousand years. A unique feature
of Almora's discovery is that, unlike other hill stations, it was not found and
established by the British. The discovery of Almora is the subject of a
fascinating local legend.
During
the British rule of India, Jawaharlal Nehru was imprisoned in the Almora Jail.
Below is a quick glimpse of Almora:
Places to visit
in Almora
The
Mall: The Mall of Almora is the administrative centre
of the city. The market area runs parallel to the Mall and is only accessible
by foot. With traditional carved wooden facades on buildings and shops on the
ground floor, it has a distinct hill station character.
Nanda
Devi Temple:
Nanda Devi and Lord Shiva shrines are located
in the main temple complex. The temple of Nanda Devi, Almora's presiding deity
and named after the region's highest point, is constructed in the traditional
Kumaoni stone temple form. During the Nanda Devi festival in August, the temple
complex is alive with music and dance.
Bright
End Corner:
A hilltop location 2.5 kilometres from Almora
offers a spectacular view of Kumaon's valleys and soaring peaks. It's also a
good spot to catch the sunrise or sunset, which transform the surrounding
scenery into a rainbow of gold, green, and red hues. At this secluded place,
there is a Circuit House where you can stay overnight.
Deer
Park: Around 3 kilometres from town, a Deer Park has
been developed among the towering pine trees. The park is a nice place to walk
with a range of deer species, leopards, and the Himalayan black bear, but the
wildlife isn't particularly exciting.
Martola: Martola, a lovely picnic spot surrounded by forested hills
and lovely gardens.

town. Outside the Binsar sanctuary, there are private resorts and a lovely
